Ground Pressure Explained
Why ground pressure decides whether your machine works or sinks — and why tracked diggers protect soft Cork ground.
Ground pressure is simply the machine's weight divided by the area it stands on. Get it wrong and a heavy machine sinks into soft ground, tears up finished surfaces, or becomes unstable on a slope. Get it right and the same weight sits safely where a wheeled machine would bog down.
Why tracks beat wheels on soft ground
Tracks spread the machine's weight over a long, wide contact area, so the pressure on any one point stays low. Wheels concentrate the load onto small contact patches — fine on hardstanding, a liability on a wet Cork field or a recently filled trench. This is why tracked dumpers and excavators are the default for soft, sloped or reinstated ground.
Protecting finished surfaces
Low ground pressure also matters on the opposite problem — driveways, lawns and paving you don't want to damage. Rubber-tracked machines distribute weight and avoid the point loading that cracks slabs or ruts a lawn, which is why they're preferred for domestic and landscaping work.
Practical takeaways
If the ground is soft, wet, sloped or freshly filled, ask for tracked machines. If you're working over a finished surface, ask for rubber tracks. And remember that a smaller machine at low ground pressure often outperforms a bigger one that sinks — size isn't the only factor in getting the job done.

Why do diggers have tracks instead of wheels?
Tracks spread weight over a large area, lowering ground pressure so the machine works on soft, wet or sloped ground without sinking.
Will a tracked machine damage my driveway?
Rubber-tracked machines are designed to protect finished surfaces by distributing weight, though care is always taken on delicate paving.
What machine is best for wet, boggy ground?
Low-ground-pressure tracked machines, such as tracked dumpers and excavators, are built for soft and boggy conditions.
