Hiring Machinery For Drainage
Choosing the right digger and support equipment for drainage trenches, soakaways and pipe runs in Cork.
Drainage work lives and dies on getting the trench right: correct depth and fall, safe trench walls, and clean reinstatement. The machinery choice follows from the depth and access more than anything else.
Match the machine to the depth
Shallow garden drainage and soakaways suit a micro or mini digger — enough reach without oversizing for the spoil and access. Standard drainage at 1.5–3m is classic mini-digger territory. Deep or commercial drainage beyond 3m needs a full-size excavator that can safely reach the bottom and manage the spoil.
Keep the trench safe
Deep trenches can collapse, and that's a serious risk. Battering the sides back or using trench support isn't optional at depth — plan for it. This is another job where an experienced operator's judgement about ground and depth is genuinely valuable.
Locate services first
Drainage often runs alongside other buried services. Locate and hand-dig around gas, water, electricity and telecoms before machine digging near them — see our guide on avoiding underground services for the full routine.
Backfill and reinstate
Once the pipe's laid and checked, backfill in layers and compact properly — a plate compactor or small roller stops the trench line sinking later. Skimping here is why so many reinstated trenches show up as a settled scar months on.

What digger do I need for drainage trenches?
Match dig depth to trench depth: micro/mini diggers for shallow to standard drainage, a full excavator for deep runs beyond 3m.
How do I stop a drainage trench collapsing?
Batter the sides back or use trench support at depth. Deep trenches are a serious collapse risk and must be planned for.
Do I need to compact backfill over drainage?
Yes — backfill in layers and compact with a plate or roller to prevent the trench line settling and sinking later.
